Why we teach adults in a different way to children.
You may be one of the 12.8 million adults over the age of 16 who can not swim 25m unaided and be feeling, scared, embarrassed or intimidated at the thought of learning to swim. But in the words of one client in his late 40s:
"This is the best thing I have done in my life"
You may have watched your children learn to swim and seen them in buoyancy aids, noodles, arm discs and fins and not want that for you - well if you go to a qualified Aquaphobia Coach such as myself you will not as we teach adults in a different way.
Firstly children do not have the core strength to to hold themselves in the water, to bring their arms over and do many of the core skills required when they first start due to their biological growth cycle. As an adult we have these in place and thus with the right teaching we can bypass these stages and get you happy and moving as soon as you are ready.
Secondly we teach adults on a one to one basis in quiet warm pools - so all those memories of school lessons in cold crowded pools are overwritten.
When teaching adults the process is supportive, starting off with a conversation around a short questionnaire on your water experiences, fears and history of swimming - to enable the teacher to understand where you are and also in some cases it may unlock feelings and memories in you that will help you with the journey.
We then take it slowly, at you pace and get you feeling happy and comfortable in the water, before any of the recognised swimming strokes are attempted. This can be as simply as sitting on the steps, getting the feet in and getting used to the pool environment. We then move on to moving round the pool, floating, getting ears and the face in the water and ensuring that you are happy and relaxed.
Once this has been achieved we can then start to think about what you would view as 'swimming'. A happy relaxed client in the water is one that will then learn to love swimming.
So what is stopping you, remember the hardest part is getting in contact, once you have done that you are in our hands and on the journey to learning one of the best things you will ever do - be at one with the water and swim.
